Set in a dystopian version of North America in the year 2044, the film centres on Niska (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers), a Cree woman who joins a resistance movement to the military government in order to save her daughter. Cree-Métis writer/director Danis Goulet has described the film as inspired in part by Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film Children of Men, as well as by the military response to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests on the Standing Rock Reservation in 2016. In addition, the film functions in part as an allegory for Canada’s devastating and deadly “residential school” system.

Ms. Magazine notes: “The dedication shown in Night Raiders to authentic Indigenous representation extends both in front and behind the camera, as the film’s cast and crew are largely Indigenous. Goulet and her team also sought out as many Cree collaborators as possible, even building a mentorship program into the production. Further emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural connections and solidarity across communities, Night Raiders is a joint Canadian/New Zealand venture, executive produced by Taika Waititi and building in Māori elements alongside North American Indigenous ones.”
