You can be one of the best-known performers in Canada and still face financial insecurity. When asked why she was living at PAL Toronto, Frances Hyland (pictured) – considered one of the finest Shakespearean actors of her generation – replied: “I never made more than $25,000 a year.” In the nation’s capital, thousands of arts workers live below the poverty line most of their lives. They contribute so much to the cultural fabric of the city, yet face major obstacles in their senior years. PAL Ottawa seeks to meet this challenge by providing seniors in the capital region who work(ed) in the arts sector with affordable housing and personal support in a creative, caring community.
